The Cunningham

5 things you may not know about The Cunningham, Ashfield’s newest retirement living

Most people hear “new retirement village” and picture the facilities. But the decisions that shape how a place feels to live in are often the ones you don’t see on a floor plan.

We’re preparing to launch The Cunningham, our new retirement village in Ashfield. Here are five things you might not know about it, and the thinking behind them.

Its size is deliberate
We chose 46 two- and three-bedroom apartments so that neighbours get to know one another. In a community of this size, familiar faces and everyday encounters grow into friendships.

It’s designed so you don’t have to move again

Wide hallways, walk-in showers and single-level living aren’t what people ask about on a first visit, but they mean your home can adapt as your needs change. And with home care available in your apartment and residential aged care next door, extra support can come to you without you ever having to leave the community you’ve built.

Your pet can come too

For many people, a pet is family. The Cunningham’s homes are pet-friendly, because a new chapter shouldn’t mean leaving a companion behind.

There’s more to do than you might expect

Alongside the pool and community garden, residents will have a gym, library, craft room and workshop – spaces to stay active, take up something new, or simply get to know the neighbours.

It began with one nurse’s idea

In the early 1930s, nurse Ann Scurr opened Bethel Rest Home in Ashfield believing every person has worth, whatever their age. Nearly a century on, The Cunningham is the newest chapter of her story.

Our CEO Leigh Kildey says Ann’s belief in the worth of every person still guides the way we work today, and it’s what sets us apart.

The Cunningham is scheduled to open in May 2028, and we look forward to sharing our progress with you.
